Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Our team will always try to preserve your natural smile whenever possible. However, in the following cases, we may recommend extracting a tooth:

  • It’s impacted below the gumline, like wisdom teeth.
  • There’s not enough room in the mouth to undergo orthodontic treatment.
  • A tooth has been fractured or cracked.
  • An infection has spread to the roots of the teeth and can’t be treated with a root canal.
  • Gum disease has eroded the supportive tissues around a tooth, causing it to become loose.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are two different types of tooth extractions:

  • A simple extraction – A simple extraction is used when the tooth in question has broken through the gumline. This allows Dr. Jordan to use special tools to grip the tooth, rock it back and forth, and remove it from the socket.
  • A surgical extraction – A simple extraction is ideal when the tooth in question is trapped underneath the gumline. If that’s the case, then Dr. Jordan will need to create a small incision to access it. Then, he can remove it and tend to the extraction site.

Important reminder: In both cases, the procedure will begin with us thoroughly numbing your mouth. So, you don’t have to worry – you won’t feel any discomfort during your time in the treatment chair. If you’re still a bit nervous, anxious, or worried, let us know; you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry.

There are a few steps you need to take to heal from your oral surgery, including:

  • Changing the gauze pads as needed
  • Using a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time
  • Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
  • Keeping your head elevated, including while you sleep
  • Eating extremely soft foods, like plain yogurt and applesauce
  • Not doing HIIT training or any other strenuous exercises
  • Drinking water to stay hydrated (without using a straw!)
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site
