What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are essentially protective “caps” placed over severely damaged or decayed teeth to restore their strength and appearance. Traditionally, they’re made with a variety of materials, including metal, ceramic, and porcelain, depending on the needs of the patient and the position of the enhancement.
However, our practice recommends zirconia, a highly durable, long-lasting, and beautiful ceramic that can be used in a variety of situations. Once your new restoration is in place, the tooth blends naturally into your smile and functions just like a regular tooth.
If you have advanced decay, a crack in your tooth, or a large break, a dental crown could be the best way to restore and protect your smile.
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns typically require two appointments to perform. At your first appointment, we will take several highly accurate impressions with our 3D scanning technology. In most cases, this is sufficient to create a model of your teeth, but occasionally the process may require actual molds.
While the tooth is numb, Dr. Jordan will prepare it by removing any decay and properly shaping the surface to fit into the crown.
We’ll then create a temporary crown, attaching it with a gentle adhesive, so it’ll stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks. This is done to protect the newly-shaped tooth while your custom restoration is fabricated by a dental laboratory.
At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed. Then, the tooth is cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully bonded in place to ensure correct spacing and bite.
Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

There are numerous benefits to receiving a traditional dental crown in Carrollton. Here’s what you can look forward to once you’ve finished your treatment:
- Enhanced Appearance: Dental crowns made at a dental lab are incredibly life-like and blend right into your smile.
- Powerful Protection: Crowns are made to go over damaged teeth with compromised structure, protecting them from additional damage and wear.
- Long-Lasting Durability: With great oral care, your dental crown can last for over a decade. Some patients even enjoy their benefits for a lifetime.
- Enhanced Quality of Life: Not only do crowns protect your teeth from damage, but they also allow you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
Dental Crown FAQs
Are Dental Crowns Permanent?
Technically, no, your dental crown will likely need to be replaced eventually. Rest assured, though, that they’re built to last! The average dental crown has a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years, and can support your smile for even longer when taken care of properly.
Dental crowns are permanent in the sense that the treatment process is irreversible. Teeth can’t repair themselves in the same way the rest of your body can, so after we reshape your tooth, it will be that shape forever. This also means that a tooth weak enough to need a crown in the first place will always need extra protection.
How Do You Know When a Dental Crown Needs to Be Replaced?
The best way to know whether it’s time to replace your dental crown is to schedule an appointment with our office. We’ll be able to take X-rays and visually examine the crown to check on its structural integrity.
That said, there are a few signs that can indicate it’s time to make the swap sooner than later, such as:
- Discomfort. If the tooth underneath your crown hurts, it could mean you have a cavity. We’ll have to remove and replace the crown in order to treat the issue.
- A loose crown might not be cemented properly, or could be damaged. Give us a call and we’ll help you address the problem.
- Noticeable wear. No longer being satisfied with the appearance of your crown is reason enough to have it replaced!
Do Dental Crowns Get Cavities?
No, dental crowns cannot get cavities. However, the tooth underneath them can. Bacteria can collect in the space between the restoration and your gumline, causing harmful buildup if you’re not careful. Even though your crown is made out of inorganic materials, it’s still important to practice good oral hygiene habits to keep your mouth healthy!
Is It a Dental Emergency If Your Crown Falls Off?
Absolutely! While you may not need treatment on a same-day basis, a weakened, unprotected tooth is at greater risk for further breakage and cavities. Give us a call right away if your crown falls off, and we’ll restore your smile as soon as possible.
What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?
At All Smiles Dental of Carrollton, we craft our crowns out of cutting-edge zirconia materials. Zirconia is a type of ceramic that’s made from zirconium oxide (a.k.a. “ceramic steel”). It’s been introduced to cosmetic and restorative dentistry relatively recently but already has a reputation for being durable and aesthetically appealing. Rest assured, your zirconia crown will look natural and be stronger than ever!
