Two dental bridges resting on a blue surface next to dental tools

When it comes to dental restorations, you have options. It simply makes sense to learn more about each of them so you can make an informed decision for your smile! A dental bridge is a particularly unique tooth replacement, and if your dentist recommended this as your first choice, you might be wondering how long it will last before you need a replacement.

In truth, that all depends on how well you take care of it. Keep reading to learn more.

What is A Dental Bridge?

As mentioned previously, there are plenty of dental restorations out there. A dental bridge is the one that most dentists will recommend if you’re missing multiple teeth in a straight row. To complete the replacement, they’ll place a crown over the two healthy teeth at either end of your dental void, then “bridge the gap” by connecting the crowns to a set of false teeth. Overall, it’s often more cost-effective than receiving a partial denture or multiple dental implants.

Minimum Lifespan: 5 to 7 Years

Generally speaking, a dental bridge will last for at least five to seven years. That’s assuming you don’t have an accident or other special circumstances that would cause it to break or wear down early, of course. While dental implants have a much longer life expectancy, replacing your bridge every five to seven years is still affordable and on par with other restorations.

Lifespan with Good Care: 10 Years or More!

Now, if you take good care of your bridge and take steps to help it go the distance, then it could last for 10 years – or more. If you want your tooth replacement to last as long as possible, here’s what you should do:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily.
  • Floss at least once per day.
  • Scrub underneath your bridge with a sulcus brush.
  • Visit your dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months.
  • Avoid bad dental habits like nail biting, crunching on ice, and using your teeth as tools.
  • Wear a mouthguard for intense workouts or contact sports.

With proper maintenance, you can get incredible value out of your dental bridge!
